LGBTQ+ Rights Have Come Too Far
By Chet Blatherson

Led by the Trump administration, conservatives are pushing to eliminate protections and programs for L.G.B.T.Q. people. And three years ago this month, the justices overturned Roe v. Wade and eliminated the constitutional right to abortion, demonstrating that this Supreme Court is willing to jettison five decades of precedent.
The Southern Baptist Convention, which is often seen as a strong indicator of conservative evangelical opinion, voted overwhelmingly earlier this month to call on the Supreme Court to overturn Obergefell, citing inspiration from the successful effort to overturn Roe.
If the court overturned its earlier decision, states would be free, if they wanted, to ban gay marriage — or to continue to permit same sex unions.
Oops! I accidentally copy-pasted from my colleagues’ article “Ten Years In, Same-Sex Marriage Is Part of American Life. But It’s Still Under Attack.” Probably because we’re posting these on the same day, if I had to guess. Or maybe it’s my damn computer – always have so much trouble converting to pdf.
Anyway, what was I aiming to write? Ah, yes! How the real threat to gay marriage is trans people. As a gay man, I believe the most important use of my platform at this moment in history is to decry the madness prevalent in our society today. Imagine an America in Constitutional crisis… a President of the United States who regularly, publicly admits he has no intention of abiding by the document that forms the bedrock of American democracy. A nation world-renowned for its peaceful transfer of power, torn asunder by political violence. Existential threats to work and life like A.I. which have already affected elections around the globe.
And on top of all that, I need to share a bathroom with someone whose genitals, I assume, are different than mine? Where does it end?? Someone needs to seize America by the shoulders and shake her, and scream from the rooftops, “This… this is priority number one!” Or I will never again be able to vape in the stall at peace.
I’ve complained in the past about all the money pouring into LGBTQ-friendly charities (and what is with the LGBTQIA43u98342fewaj+++ label?? Haha, my keyboard is too sticky to type most of those letters!) Groups like the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation raised over $800 million in 2021. The Human Rights Campaign has received record-breaking revenues since 2015. Cha-ching.
But, none of that money has to do with me, and that’s where the real national crisis begins. As a gay man, I must say, all gay issues are settled, and the only threat we face is people conflating us with those radicals. We won, okay? There’s no need to fight for anything else. If we accept zany ‘gender ideology,’ the country might turn against us and illegalize gay marriage. This will only happen if we’re too accepting of trans people. Outside their intrusions, I have never experienced discrimination of any kind. None. At all. Ever. So shut up about it, okay? Just shut up.
Listen. I have a long record of pro-trans activism. I support transgender rights, like… uh, a lot of them. I support so, so many transgender rights. I just don’t think those people should be allowed the privacy of medical care between themselves and a doctor, or the use of a bathroom, or to participate in sports. I HATE WHEN THEY RUN FAST, and I know most of you do, too. Lord, I lost many-a Benji Franks betting on my niece’s track meet.
Look. When I was coming up and fighting for gay rights, we fought mounds of propaganda that promised our movement was harming the rest of the country. As a gay man, I can tell you all about the right’s effort to delegitimize us. Their talking points became so entrenched that members of our own community began to pick them up too, dividing everyone. We cannot allow this kind of splintering to happen – so we need to cut off all the trans people.
Or else we’ll continue to see the fascist gender movement we all hate thrive. We’ll see more signs: “TRANS MEN ARE MEN. TRANS WOMEN ARE WOMEN.” These – I shudder – statements are so, so bossy. Imagine a protest sign without a question mark – a protest that doesn’t invite debate? Just shoving those viewpoints in our faces, no matter how stupid or disgusting they really are.
Anyway, trans people aren’t real.
